DIY March bracelet!

2:39 μ.μ.

According to a Greek tradition on the first day of March everyone should wear a red and white bracelet for good luck and to avoid getting a sunburn! This custom is very popular even today! The bracelets were used to be made from a plain white and red thread. Nowadays, March bracelets are also a fashion accessory and you can buy one with beads, charms and anything you can imagine! It has to be red and white thought! Today I'm giving you some ideas so you can make your own March bracelet!

I'm using this red and white cord (the same one we use on Christmas decorations) and beads, charms, tassels, bows etc! You can find instructions on how to make those tiny cotton tassels here. If you are having trouble threading beads to this cord, try using a needle to help you!

Don't forget to make an adjustable macrame closure! You can find full instructions here.

I also made a free printable with proverbs for March in Greek. If it's "all Greek to you" here's one popular proverb about the weather in March (in a rough translation) :
"March plays tricks, one day he laughs and the other day he cries"!

So what do you think about this tradition? Would you wear a March bracelet?

  2. Really? I thought this tradition existed only in Bulgaria and Romania! We call these "martenitsa" and the holiday is Baba (Granny) Marta! Baba Marta is known for her controversial temper - sometimes she's good and sometimes - evil, just like the month of March :) And the white and red threads should bring health and good harvest. Wow, I just red in wikipedia (Bulgarian version) that the tradition comes from Thracians and ancient Greeks and is still observed on the Balkan Peninsula, Romania, Moldova and even some parts of the Ukraine! It must be a new upgraded article ;)
